ENGLISH SUMMARY: There is currently a dearth of thorough and useful guidelines that can be applied to understand the role of governance mechanisms in achieving sustainable development. Despite the ocean economy’s potential as a tool for promoting sustainable development, there is still a need for a more responsive ocean governance system that can manage transformative and adaptive change. The study aimed to analyse the role of governance mechanisms towards achieving sustainable development in the coastal and marine management areas of KwaZulu-Natal. The objectives were: i) To discuss global case studies on governance mechanisms for sustainable development in coastal areas. ii) To review legislation and policies that govern marine and coastal areas in South Africa. iii) To discuss the long-term sustainability of the ocean economy. iv) To investigate how governance mechanisms can contribute to the sustainability of coastal areas in KwaZulu-Natal. v) To discuss measures to prevent further ecological depletions by fostering ethical management of marine and coastal environments. vi) To examine the encounters and successes of using governance mechanisms to satisfy varying interests and reduce user conflicts. The study used a qualitative, non-probability research methodology, and there was a thorough discussion of the methodological processes taken to look into governance mechanisms. Rich descriptive data were gathered, using a method called a policy review and analysis, which was later utilised to code and analyse the data. The findings showed that to preserve the environment, the sustainability concept needs to be organised methodically and supported by environmental planning processes. There are a variety of complementary techniques that can be utilised to successfully support the link between SEA, environmental impact assessments (EIA), and sustainable development (SD). Collaboration and co-management for environmental governance were investigated and addressed. These principles are adaptable, and in settings where players are marginalised, collaborative processes demand a clear concept of who the participants are or should be. The results demonstrated that coastal habitats are better able to endure climate change’s impacts and human activities when biological diversity is preserved. Effective environmental governance promotes environmentally responsible tourism to reduce adverse environmental effects and preserve the natural beauty and integrity of coastal areas. It was found that KZN has a combination of strict environmental regulations, strategic planning, stakeholder involvement, monitoring and reporting, and international cooperation, for protecting its unique ecosystems and advancing a green and sustainable future. The study developed an environmental governance mechanism framework for sustainable development, with recommendations on collaborative governance, public participation, integration of SDGs at an early planning stage, for example, in SEAs and EMFs, coordination of regulations and instruments and incorporation of the key pillars of sustainability to promote sustainable development.
