Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Sociology and Social Anthropology. Interracial adoption Racially mixed families South Africa -- Race relations Post-apartheid era -- South Africa UCTD Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2024. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African families have been formed through Transracial Adoption (TRA) since the introduction of the Child Care Amendment Act 86 of 1991, which abolished the Apartheid state requirement for ‘same-race’ adoption and thus allowed a shift in the legal boundaries that made the possibility of constituting a ‘transracial’ family possible. Even though Apartheid ended, it does not imply that race is no longer a problem or does not pose some challenges. Since Apartheid has had a lasting effect on South Africa, transracially adoptive families operate in a country where racial tensions and segregation continue to shape the experiences of South Africans. This research explored transracial adoption, more specifically the experiences of being part of a transracial family, formed through the process of adoption and its challenges and joys, as it relates to race in particular. This included how these families' conceptualisation of race, the process of racialisation, and forms of racism were encountered both within and outside the family. This research explored the meaning of race by asking the question: what do family members’ accounts and experiences of transracial adoption, and life as a family constituted by this process, tell us about race, racism, and racialisation in South Africa? This research followed a qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews with three families, together with one adult who identified as a transracial adoptee in South Africa. The participants received a variety of comments and reactions regarding their family dynamic, as well as experienced a wide range of challenges. Despite the challenges, the participants overwhelmingly described their experience as a transracially adoptive family as positive. Many, if not all, highlighted the love and connection within their families and, regardless of racial differences, parents expressed the joy of raising their adopted children and witnessing their growth.
