ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Brass educators in the formal and non-formal teaching sectors are required to have knowledge of and a degree of practical proficiency on all instruments of the brass family, as they rarely teach only the instrument on which they specialised. Additionally, with the increasing awareness of musicians’ occupational health and playing related health problems (PRHP’s), brass educators must be cognisant of their role in teaching sound technical principles during the formative stages of tuition, to prevent playing-related injuries later in the musical career of their learners. This research sets out to identify the core principles for formative brass teaching in South Africa, and to provide supplementary teaching material for emerging brass teachers in the formal and non-formal music sectors to ensure sound, sustainable teaching in early brass instruction. A review of standard brass pedagogical literature emphasised the importance of technical development (optimal breathing, embouchure formation, strength and development, posture etc.) from the first lesson to ensure optimal sound production and prevent injury. In addition, these texts highlight the necessity for brass educators to be familiar with the historical development of brass instruments and the principles of sound production (brass acoustics, anatomy of instruments). Because much of this literature is written and compiled by American, British, and European academics and performers, South African brass pedagogues were interviewed to provide insight into the approach to brass teaching in this country. There is a paucity of literature emerging from South Africa in this sphere, and that which is available, tends to be limited to post - graduate study. Key findings from this study indicate that sound technical development should be central to brass pedagogy, as it establishes a solid playing foundation and assists in the prevention of brass players’ PRHP’s. This important aspect should be incorporated into teaching in a positive and innovative manner, to maintain the learner’s interest and not compromise enjoyment and musicianship. Insight into instrument-specific challenges, the selection of learners, suitable teaching material and synchronising motivation and learning capacity also emerged from the interview process as additional factors which contributed to sound teaching. It is hoped that this research will assist the emerging brass teacher, in any South African context, to incorporate sound pedagogical principles in their teaching practice.
