ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Radar development over the years has had more efforts into pulsed radars. Limitations in technology limited the development of Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave(FMCW) radars. Advances in technology through the years mean that FMCW radars can now be developed. This thesis presents the development of a transmitter and design of antennas for FMCW ground penetrating radar. The transmitter is developed for wide band operation and high range resolution. A linear frequency modulated waveform is generated by the use of a Phase Locked Loop(PLL). The antenna designed is developed based on a Bow-tie antenna, and various methods are explored to increase the bandwidth. The design and analysis of the antenna is done in CST. A study is made on the parameters on the antenna to optimise it and get a design that gives wide band operation. The antenna is designed to give a radiation unidirectional radiation pattern, this is achieved by bending the antenna and attaching a cavity backing to it. Isolation between two of the Bow-tie antennas is achieved better than 30dB for antennas in close proximity. The selection of the antenna feed involved the design of a Chebyschev Coplanar Waveguide. Recommendations are made into further study of the Bow-tie Antenna for wide band GPR, and the effect the bend has on the radiation pattern, and on the coplanar waveguide. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Radarontwikkeling het oor die jare meer pogings tot gepulseerde radars gehad. Beperkings in tegnologie het die ontwikkeling van frekwensie-gemoduleerde deurlopende golf (FMCW) radars beperk. Vooruitgang in tegnologie deur die jare beteken dat FMCW-radars nou ontwikkel kan word. Hierdie tesis bied die ontwikkeling van ’n sender en ontwerp van antennas vir FMCW-grondindringende radar aan. Die sender is ontwikkel vir wye bandwerking en ho¨e eikafstandresolusie. ’N Lineˆere frekwensie gemoduleerde golfvorm word gegenereer deur die gebruik van ’n Fase Geslote Lus (PLL). Die antenna wat ontwerp is, is ontwikkel op grond van ’n Bow-tie antenna, en verskillende metodes word ondersoek om die bandwydte te verhoog. Die ontwerp en ontleding van die antenna word in CST gedoen. ’N Studie word gemaak oor die parameters op die antenna om dit te optimaliseer en ’n ontwerp te kry wat wye bandwerking gee. Die antenna is ontwerp om ’n straling eenrigting stralingspatroon te gee, dit word bereik deur die antenna te buig en ’n holte daaraan te heg.Isolasie tussen twee van die Bow-tie antenna word beter bereik as 30dB vir antennas in die nabyheid. Die keuse van die antennavoer behels die ontwerp van ’n Chebyschev Coplanar Waveguide. Aanbevelings word gemaak in verdere studie van die Bow-tie Antenna vir wye band GPR, en die effek wat die buiging op die stralingspatroon het, en op die koplanˆere golfleier.
