Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies. Emigration and immigration -- South Africa -- Eastern Cape -- Economic aspects UCTD Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2024. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this paper the effects and dynamics of out-migration in the Eastern Cape province was examined through studying the migration movements from the Eastern Cape in 2001. In the process the spatial patterns of the out-migrants in the province was highlighted. Furthermore, the demographic and economic profiles of the migrants were also gathered to understand their movements. It was found that out migration within the Easten Cape mostly occurred to the big (coastal) cities and urban areas. Inter-provincial migration occurs mostly between the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape and Gauteng with 33.8% of all out migrants that head to the Western Cape, and 31.6 % of migrants who move to Gauteng. Most migrants are from the rural districts of Eastern Cape as compared to the urban districts, i.e., Sarah Baartman, Nelson Mandela and Buffalo City. Reasons for the migration from the Eastern Cape differed depending on where the migrants were from. Demographic profiles further showed that men and women between 15 and 34 years old would be the most likely to migrate. The rural areas of the Eastern Cape province are negatively affected by out migration as people who are economically active due to being young are migrating to urban areas or other provinces. These are the people who could positively contribute to the economy and development of the Eastern Cape. The people that remain in the province are usually less educated, with no or very little income, making them highly dependent on social grants and remittances. Although the poor economy is the main reason for migration to urban centraL and other provinces, the situation is exacerbated by poor service delivery concerning education, health, water and infrastructure. Poor governance and a corrupted provincial government are the main fuels of poor service delivery and poor development. The province is caracterised by high political corruption that hinders development.
