ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the current era of Industry 4.0, the rapid evolution of technologies is influencing all sectors of the economy. This requires maintenance to develop along the same vein. Recognising the potential for cost reduction and minimised downtime, organisations have realised the value of the implementation of digitised maintenance and effective maintenance practices. These developments have allowed Smart Maintenance to move from a distant dream to an attainable reality. There is a need to align maintenance with the industry 4.0 developments. This provides the opportunity to develop a roadmap to Smart Maintenance, providing a systematic plan of action to reach Smart Maintenance, while enhancing the current maintenance in the process. This is of particular importance to the inner-city public bus service industry in South Africa, as they are facing economic challenges and need to find ways to reduce costs while providing reliable service. A thorough literature review is conducted that identifies key elements that enable Smart Maintenance and provides the foundational knowledge for the development of a roadmap within the industry. These elements and components are further investigated by conducting an empirical investigation through structured surveys with management-level employees in the South African inner-city public bus service industry. This data informs the development of a Smart Maintenance roadmap incorporating the different elements that enable Smart Maintenance. This includes the maintenance strategy, Industry 4.0 tools, data collection methods, human capital resources, data-driven decision-making, internal integration and external integration and their components, aiming to maximise the technical and economic effectiveness of the maintenance measures. This roadmap is validated through face-to-face interviews with individuals with knowledge and experience within the industry. This ensures the practical applicability of the roadmap and provides valuable feedback to refine the roadmap. While the researcher acknowledges the limitations of the sample size and practical implementation of the roadmap, the thesis contributes both theoretically and practically. Theoretical contributions include the understanding of the interdependency between the different elements that enable Smart Maintenance and how their development can align with the improvement of current maintenance. This also provides a practical guide for inner-city public bus services in South Africa to navigate the intricate path to Smart Maintenance while aiming to reduce cost and increase reliability amid the challenges within the current economic environment. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In vandag se Industry 4.0 beïnvloed die vinnige evolusie van tegnologie elke sektor van die ekonomie. Dit verg instandhouding om langs diselfde pas te ontwikkel. Deur die potensiaal vir koste vermindering en geminimaliseerde afbreektyd te erken, het organisasies die waarde van die implementering van doeltreffende instandhouding en digitaliseringspraktyke erken. Hierdie ontwikkelings het Slim Instandhouding in staat gestel om van 'n verre droom na 'n haalbare werklikheid te beweeg. Daar bestaan 'n behoefte om instandhouding in lyn te bring met die ontwikkelings van Industrie 4.0. Dit bied 'n geleentheid om 'n slim instandhoudingspadkaart te bou, wat 'n sistematiese aksieplan verskaf om slim instandhouding te bereik, terwyl die huidige instandhouding in die proses verbeter word. Dit is van besondere belang vir die binne-stedilke openbare busdiensbedryf in Suid-Afrika, aangesien hulle ekonomiese uitdagings in die gesig staar en maniere moet vind om koste te verminder en terselfdertyd betroubare diens te lewer. ‘n Omvattende literatuuroorsig word uitgevoer om die sleutelelemente te identifiseer wat slim instandhouding moontlik maak en die fundamentele kennis verskaf vir vir ontwikkeling van ‘n padkaart binne die industrie. Hierdie faktore en komponente word verder ondersoek deur ‘n empiriese ondersoek in te stel deur gebruik te maak van gestruktureerde opnames van bestuurspersoneel in die SuidAfrikaanse stedelike openbare busdienstesektor. Hierdie data dien as inligting om 'n Slim Instandhoudings-padkaart te ontwikkel wat die verskeie elemente insluit wat Slim Instandhouding moontlik maak, insluitend instandhoudingstrategieë, Industrie 4.0 tegnologieë, data-insamelingsmetodes, menslike hulpbronne, data-gedrewe besluitneming, interne en eksterne integrasie en hul komponente, met die oog om die tegniese en ekonomiese effektiwiteit van die instandhouing prosese te maksimeer. Hierdie padkaart word geverifieer deur persoonlike onderhoude met mense met bedryfskennis en ervaring. Dit verseker die padkaart se praktiese toepaslikheid en verskaf waardevolle terugvoer om die padkaart te verfyn. Alhoewel die navorser die beperkings in steekproefgrootte en werklike implementering van die padkaart erken, dra die tesis steeds by tot die teorie en praktyk. Teoretiese bydraes sluit in die begrip van die interafhanklikhede tussen die verskillende elemente wat slim instandhouding moontlik maak en hoe die ontwikkeling daarvan kan saamval met die verbetering van huidige instandhoudingspraktyke in. Dit verskaf ook praktiese leiding vir Suid-Afrika se stedelike openbare busdienste om die komplekse pad na slim instandhouding te navigeer wat daarop gemik is om koste te verminder en betroubaarheid te verhoog in die lig van die uitdagings van die huidige ekonomiese omgewing.
