ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This investigation is based on my interest, as an art jewellery designer, in how my unconscious mind can be portrayed through art jewellery as visual metaphors and influence my creative process by gaining insight into endopsychic perceptions. My research consists of a theoretical component in the form of a thesis and a practical component in the form of an exhibition. The two components mutually inform and influence each other. My research analyses the unconscious mind through my approach to an art jewellery practice and the theoretical research on the psychoanalytical theory of Sigmund Freud. I refer to Freud’s psychoanalytical theory as a starting point for my theoretical understanding and, in doing so, attempted to understand the relationship between jewellery and the human body from a psychoanalytical perspective. I combine this research with an intimate interpretation of unconscious motions through the process of my design experimentations and drawings. This forms the meaning behind material exploration and, finally, the creation of art jewellery. In the practical component of my research, I analyse my dreams through specific design and material studies to understand where illusions of the mind meet reality. The design techniques consist of controlled and uncontrolled processes, allowing an exploration of an unconscious creative practice. I take a spontaneous approach throughout my creative practice, especially during the design process and visual application of ideas. To achieve this, I start with the methods that the surrealist artists used, such as psychic automatism and dreaming. These techniques are discussed in the thesis and have inspired this investigation. In my attempt to access more of my creative potential, I integrate my knowledge based on the results of these techniques and create my methods, allowing me to access an unconscious level in my mind through metaphors. The design results are recorded and used to inspire a series of art jewellery pieces. Research Question : How can the unconscious mind be harnessed to produce visual metaphors expressed through creative jewellery practice?
