Faculty of Military Science. Dept. of Industrial Psychology (Mil). Stress management Stress (Psychology) Self-efficacy Soldiers Sense of coherence UCTD Thesis (MMil)--Stellenbosch University, 2024. Military personnel frequently encounter being separated from their families for prolonged periods due to deployments and/or attending training programmes. Although the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) aims to provide support structures to its personnel prior to soldiers leaving home for extended periods, more can be done to enhance the coping strategies and resources utilised during extended military training programmes. The current study therefore aimed to examine the resources and coping strategies utilised by officers enrolled in the Joint Senior Command and Staff Programme. The researcher employed a quantitative method to investigate the relationship between several personal resources (i.e. resilience, self-efficacy, sense of coherence, and frequency of home visits) and active coping. To select respondents to participate in the study, non-probability, purposive- and convenience sampling was employed, and data were collected by using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by military officers (N = 79) who had either already completed the Joint Senior Command and Staff Programme successfully or who were still on the course. The results of the research show that there is a statistically significant positive link between the dependent variable, active coping, and the independent variables (i.e. resilience, self-efficacy, and sense of coherence). The results of the regression analysis however showed that the greatest predictor of active coping is resilience. Additionally, and novel to this field of research, a significant negative relationship was established between active coping and the frequency of home visits. By examining various resources used for coping, such as levels of resilience, self-efficacy beliefs, sense of coherence, and the frequency with which soldiers visited their families during courses over extended periods, the current research sought to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the psychological processes that underlie active coping. The thesis concludes with practical implications and recommendations on how soldiers might cope by using behavioural, cognitive, and emotional coping strategies when attending military courses.
