ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Objectives: To evaluate the Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) outcomes (live births rates/ ongoing births rates/clinical pregnancy rates) at Tygerberg Academic Hospital. Design: This was a retrospective observational, single-center cohort study. Setting: Tygerberg Academic Hospital - Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Reproductive Medicine Unit. Population: All women who underwent ART (IVF/ICSI) with a frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) method in Tygerberg Academic Hospital from January 2016 - December 2020 were used as the study population. Methods: Clinical records of women who underwent frozen-thaw embryo transfer (FET) in Tygerberg Academic Hospital from January 2016 to December 2020 were used to collect data. The principal investigator using a pre-programmed Excel spreadsheet did the collection of summary data. Data were evaluated for (live births rates/ ongoing births rates/clinical pregnancy rates – primary objectives) and miscarriage rate, quality of embryos use, day of transfer, endometrial preparation protocol and freezing-thaw interval time as secondary objectives. Results: This study demonstrated an overall pregnancy rate of n= 24 (32.4%). The live birth rate was 18.9%. The miscarriage rate was 5.4%. The study also noted that there was no difference in outcome in terms of pregnancy rate in patients with primary infertility compared to those with secondary infertility (29% vs. 25%). The study also noted that patients with longer freeze-thaw interval had higher pregnancy rates (34.2%) compared to those with shorter periods (23.8%). The Tygerberg Academic Hospital uses the medicated endometrial preparation protocol, which is either estrogenbased (HRT protocol), or Fertomid based (modified natural cycle). For the Estrogen based protocol, the clinical pregnancy rate was 28% whereas the Fertomid-stimulated cycle group had a clinical pregnancy rate of 30%. The Tygerberg Academic Hospital Fertility unit also uses vitrification for cryopreservation, this seems to be a favored method globally. Conclusion: This study shows that frozen thaw embryo transfer cycle outcomes in Tygerberg are consistent and comparable with the existing body of literature. The pregnancy rate from this study was n=24 (32.4%), with a live birth rate of 18.9% and a miscarriage rate of 5.4%. In 67.6% of the cycles, there was unfortunately no pregnancy.
