ENGLISH SUMMARY: Estuaries are among the most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. They provide important ecosystem services, such as nutrient cycling, water filtration, storm protection and are important habitats for a wide range of species. Estuaries also are important recreational areas. Despite their importance, estuaries face significant pressures from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Determining the economic value of the ecosystem services provided by estuaries can help resource managers make informed and effective decisions about their management. This thesis uses a choice experiment to determine the marginal economic value of the recreational service provided by the Kleinmond Estuary, located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa. The aim of this study is to reveal recreational users’ preferences for improvements in open-water space and water quality in the Kleinmond Estuary to inform potential investment in and better management of the Kleinmond Estuary to ensure a sustained flow of benefits to the local community and the economy of the town. The results from the choice experiment reveal clear preferences among visitors to the Kleinmond Estuary. The willingness to pay (WTP) was highest for a significant increase in kayaking space (R156.43), followed by a WTP to avoid a moderate risk of water contamination (R144.04) and a WTP for a significant increase in views of the water (R105.81). An ordinal multinomial analysis also revealed a clear preference for scenarios with significant increases in space for kayaking. The thesis includes a comparative analysis of the estimated recreational value against the costs of implementing improvements, using net present value calculations over a 20-year period. This comparison provides insights into the economic feasibility and potential benefits of the management interventions presented in the study. Recommendations are made for future research, including conducting longitudinal studies to track changes in WTP over time, studying the ecological processes within the estuary and investigating the socio-economic factors influencing visitor preferences. Furthermore, the study discusses the need to develop and test financing mechanisms to fund the management interventions for increasing open water space and improving the water quality in the Kleinmond Estuary.
