ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a prevalent and disruptive vestibular disorder that is characterised by episodic vertigo attacks. The literature focusing on the experiences of individuals living with recurrent BPPV is limited, with no studies having been conducted in South Africa yet. The literature focusing on the impact of recurrent BPPV on the biological, psychological, and social domains of functioning is also limited, with the complicated impact of recurrent BPPV often overlooked. The understanding of the experiences of individuals living with recurrent BPPV is, therefore, limited. This study aimed to explore the experiences of individuals living with recurrent BPPV in the Western Cape, South Africa, specifically focusing on the impact of recurrent BPPV on the biological, psychological and social domains of functioning. This study used an explorative-descriptive qualitative design and included ten research participants (aged 53-76) who suffered from recurrent BPPV through purposive sampling. The ten research participants were subsequently invited to participate in semi-structured interviews, after which reflective thematic analysis was used to analyse and generate themes and subthemes. The emerging themes highlighting the experiences of individuals living with recurrent BPPV included the challenging symptoms and signs of BPPV and the avoidance of head movements as a possible trigger. Furthermore, a negative mood due to recurrent BPPV and the decreasing impact of recurrent BPPV on the psychological domain of functioning was identified. Finally, increased social withdrawal accompanied by an increased reliance on the support of others was also identified on the social domain of functioning. The Biopsychosocial model was used to conceptualise the findings of this study, and links were made to existing related literature. Through this process, it became evident that the experiences of individuals living with recurrent BPPV may be similar to those of individuals living with other peripheral vestibular disorders. Furthermore, it became clear that recurrent BPPV, although a biological disorder in nature, may negatively impact the psychological and social domains of functioning as well. This may suggest that individuals living with recurrent BPPV experience the impact of BPPV in several areas of their lives. Although the research participants reportedly had differing experiences in some areas of the study, it is evident that they are all in agreement on the multifaceted impact of recurrent BPPV on the biological, psychological and social domains of functioning. Therefore, future researchers and clinicians should consider the impact of recurrent BPPV on the biological, psychological and social domains of functioning and the interconnected relationships between these domains when attempting to treat and study recurrent BPPV effectively.
