COVID-19 (Disease) -- Social aspects -- South Africa Marginality, Social -- South Africa Pandemics -- Social aspects -- South Africa Public health -- South Africa -- Social aspects UCTD Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2024. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A devastating pandemic with political and socioeconomic ramifications has plagued humanity through every century. The most recent pandemic, COVID-19, is no different. A hallmark of each global emergency (health, financial, and socio-political) is the exposition of the injustices inherent in the inequitable power balances between the dominant and marginalized groups, the rich and the poor, the global north and south. South Africa is a historical settler colony created by a unique system of discrimination based on the brutal subjugation and exploitation of Indigenous people by white supremacists, known as apartheid. The discussion exposes the conception of South Africa’s immoral system of racial discrimination apartheid, its brutal enforcement, and political and socioeconomic consequences on the lives of the people of colour. The consequent structural inequalities, mainly racial income inequality, have created conditions of poor health amongst vulnerable groups. In the study’s context, the marginalized groups are people with disabilities, migrants, women, and children. The narrative reveals the evolution of the epidemiology of diseases of poverty through the concepts of ‘social pathology,’ syndemic theory, and social determinants of health and highlights that failure to address the underlying structural inequities equates to the failure of the impending National Health Insurance (NHI) system. The study concludes that social justice can be achieved by realizing an egalitarian society based on correcting the underlying inequalities and commitment to a future based on respecting human rights and dignity.
