Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Field programmable gate arrays Superconductivity Computer hardware description languages UCTD Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2024. Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) based Superconducting Electronics (SCE) are still mostly full-custom devices. Although gate-level reprogrammability has been demonstrated successfully with devices such as Reconfigurable Data-Path processors, a practical Superconducting Field-Programmable Gate Array (SFPGA) with the full flexibility of a traditional FPGA has yet to be developed fully. In this work we develop an all-SFQ SFPGA using Non-Destructive Read-Out (NDRO) -based shift register cells as the programmable Lookup-table memory and programmable switches of the routing framework. All designs have were verified logically and electrically in simulation and photomasks were laid out for each cell and component of the design. Academic software was retrofitted to allow mapping of high-level logic to the SFPGA model, and custom software was developed to map the logic mapping to the SFPGA’s internal memory layout. The architecture was also analyzed and optimization using a benchmark driven approach. As part of IARPA project IARPA-BAA-16-03, software was also developed to increase the proficiency of which SCE logics can be simulated and verified using hardware description language (HDL) simulators.
