ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Opera and musical theatre are two dominant genres of vocal music styles, spanning a rich and ongoing developmental history. Musical theatre absorbed popular musical genres into its repertoire style, moving away from the initial bel canto-based techniques. There is a resultant demand for singers who are proficient in both classical and contemporary music customs, which compels the modern-day singer to be versatile and knowledgeable about differing approaches to technique. Formal training in bel canto technique is well established while research into the pedagogy of contemporary vocal technique is in its infancy. This leaves a demand for information for the bel canto singer to cross reliably into a sphere of technique that is not yet codified as formally. This study contextualises the vocal technique of both bel canto and musical theatre, to strategise a reliable approach for the trained bel canto singer to cross over into relevant musical theatre contexts. This is done through a qualitative study about technique and the acquisition thereof. The history of both genres is contextualised from the vantage point of ever developing technical demands. Genre-specific technique is discussed, followed with vocal exercises for the trained bel canto singer to venture into musical theatre. Further considerations for a career in musical theatre are touched on. In conclusion, this study aims to empower the modern opera singer to use the tools at their disposal to expand their vocal techniques and utilise career opportunities in an ever- evolving industry.
