ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An institutional repository serves as the foundation for an institution’s collective memory. Typically, these open access archives only achieve a one-star rating in Tim Berners-Lee’s five-star open data taxonomy (Berners-Lee, 2012). A one-star rating indicates that the information is difficult to search using machine algorithms. To enhance information discoverability in the present day, we must ensure that data is effectively machine-searchable, with higher ratings reflecting better s earchability. This research outlines the process of transforming an institutional repository (https://uir.unisa.ac.za) from one-star textual data to four-star resource description framework (RDF) triples (W3C, 2014b). These four-star RDF triples constitute a knowledge graph, and publishing it on the public Internet in a connected manner elevates it to a knowledge graph for the institutional repository (Fensel et al., 2020). The connectedness of this knowledge graph with the cloud of linked open data (LOD) upgrades it to five-star linked open data (Pujara et al., 2013; McCrae, 2 021). Our enrichment pipeline, built on stateless microservices that use stateful messaging, facilitates the automatic conversion of web pages into a knowledge graph. Although automatic construction of a knowledge graph is feasible, some human curatorship is required to enhance the quality of this automated process. Additionally, a manual step is necessary to publish the four-star knowledge graph on the Internet, converting it into five-star LOD and integrating it into the LOD cloud. The resulting knowledge graph, explored and analysed, demonstrates that an element of the institution’s collective memory is indeed accessible. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
