ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the midst of the tumultuous political backdrop of the apartheid era in South Africa, an individual’s life trajectory serves as a testimony to unyielding resilience, artistic boldness, and unwavering dedication to music. Ronnie Samaai, a distinguished musician and music educator, is the central figure in this research because of his substantial contribution to South Africa’s rich musical landscape, notably during the challenging era of apartheid, and in the post 1994 era. Within a climate marked by political turmoil and adversity, Samaai’s tremendous contributions warrant profound recognition. Forced to forego a promising tennis career, Samaai found solace and expression as a violinist and music teacher. However, he encountered discrimination and exclusion even within the realm of music. The laws of the country at that time prohibited him from joining the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, and the City Hall limited the number of seats for non-white audience members. However, Samaai’s path was illuminated by the presence of remarkable individuals who served as beacons of guidance throughout his journey. Numerous accolades were bestowed upon him in recognition of his contributions towards the pursuit of musical excellence. Many of these individuals have recognised and given testimony to Samaai’s enduring legacy, thereby playing a pivotal role om validating his memory. This study is the first of its kind to document the life history of Ronnie Samaai and to ensure that his legacy is added to the annals of South African musical history. The research adopted narrative inquiry as the research design, with a focus on comprehending and re-telling Samaai’s life story. This method is centred on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of narratives to gain insights into the experiences and perspectives of individuals. The primary methods of data collection encompassed semi- structured interviews, archival material, and other pertinent documentation. Key themes that emerged from this research included Education, Networking, Advocacy for change, Skills and Abilities, Resilience and Humility, Sacrifice, Community Support, Conscientious Objector, Apartheid and Exclusion, and the influence of Role Models. These themes collectively articulate the life history of Ronnie Samaai.
