ENGLISH SUMMARY: In conversation with the current debate on corruption and nepotism, this study proposes to explore the patronage systems in the two passages in the Gospels of Mark 10:35-4 and Matthew 20:20-28 and consider ways in which the Gospel sentiments can help evaluate problems of nepotism in the church in Angola. This dissertation will argue that the church cannot fight public corruption or nepotism if it mirrors a high degree of nepotism within itself. On the contrary, the church must fight against nepotism from within to respond better to nationwide corruption. Nepotism is destroying the church in Angola just as in government and has dramatically affected the country socially and economically. This study uses the socio-rhetorical method to guide the exegesis of Mark 10:35-45 and Matthew 20:20-28 to explore similarities of corrupt practices in leadership today in Angola. Due to the nature of the study and the broadening of the topic of corruption, the study is restricted to one aspect of corruption: nepotism and the dynamics of leadership, by reading Mark 10:35-45 and Matthew 20:20-28 with Angolan eyes. The study starts by asserting that through the exegesis of the chosen NT texts, the dynamics of leadership in Angola, particularly in the church, which is corrupted through nepotism, can be put into perspective, and a corrective offered for many church leaders chosen on basis on friendship, cultural or family ties instead of abilities to lead. It investigates nepotism as a form of corruption from the perspective of a critical reading of Mark 10:35-45 and Matthew 20:20-28 from ethical leadership notions expressed in the texts that challenge the church in Angola. The study argues that examining the texts offers new meanings and approaches to fight corruption, particularly the scourge of nepotism in the church dynamics of leadership today, practices perpetuating the marginalisation of members in the same church through nepotism and favouritism.
