ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of my study was to investigate what is ubuntu and how it is experienced by community theatre practitioners in Gauteng province, in order to understand and analyse the role and contribution of ubuntu in transforming community theatre practitioners into cultural social agents. The intention of the study broadly was to answer the questions: What is the meaning of ubuntu for community theatre practitioners and in which ways does it foster possibility towards social change? and How do Gauteng community theatre practitioners experience ubuntu through and in their practice? The first aim was to define ubuntu in community theatre and to illustrate how ubuntu is an intangible infrastructure that fosters community theatre aesthetics, which enables possibility towards social change. The second aim was to document and analyse the perspectives of community theatre practitioners about ubuntu as a phenomenon in relation to their practice. The third and last aim of the study was be to centralise the views and understandings of ubuntu among practitioners who are creating performances on the periphery of the South African theatre landscape in Gauteng province. Phenomenology was the methodology and participatory action research was the method used to collect data through observations, focus group and individual interviews. The study finds that ubuntu is an aesthetic, as well as a spirit that gives life to storytelling and it is also a mode of communication in community theatre. From the perspective of the practitioners ubuntu is experienced across all the phases of theatre making and their awareness of ubuntu in the creation process of community theatre products can enrich the awareness of the practitioners of possible social change.
