ENGLISH SUMMARY: South Africa has a long history of racial discrimination and inequality, which can be attributed to the Apartheid system. This system was one of racial segregation, which was legally imposed and enforced by policies that the National Party Government developed between 1948 and 1993. Literature has recognised that because of the legacy of Apartheid and its residual effects, first-generation students are likely to face a multitude of problems when entering tertiary institutions. Services like career counselling can help alleviate some of these challenges. Numerous research focuses on the transition to university concerning the racial categories of students, their socio-economic backgrounds, and on students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, however, very little research focuses specifically on first-generation students and their experiences with career counselling services in South Africa. Considering this, an investigation was undertaken of the perceived factors that impact accessibility to career counselling among first-generation students at Stellenbosch University. Research suggests that many factors impact accessibility to career counselling, such as educational context and environment, socioeconomic status, the perceived cultural bias of psychometric tests, perceptions around the bias of career counselling services, and lack of knowledge of career counselling services. This study was guided by a qualitative research approach and was based on the assumptions of the interpretivist research paradigm. Furthermore, a generic qualitative research strategy was used to understand the perceived factors that impact access to career counselling services as experienced by first-generation students. This study used convenience and purposive sampling to recruit participants. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with participating first-generation students (N=22). VSAIEEDC – a cognition-based generic model, was used to analyse the data. This study can help inform counselling centres of the contextual factors that impact first-generation students’ willingness to engage with such services. This will enable career guidance centres such as the Career Advisory Services or Career Development Services to improve their services and/or develop new interventions that will better suit the needs of first-generation students.
