ENGLISH SUMMARY: Gig work is a nascent, but growing, phenomenon. In this research, gig work is defined as on-demand, task-based engagements, agreed between a party that wants a task done and a person who is willing and able to perform the task; and where parties find each other at customary spaces, through established networks, or via electronic platforms. A scoping review of existing literature indicated that most scholars explore gig work from a single domain (like economics) and focus on platform-enabled gig work happening in the Northern Hemisphere. This research takes a multi-domain approach, and uses a wide lens to include gig work that happens outside of platforms, with a focus on South Africa and how alternative futures could develop toward 2035. A framework that incorporates continuous quality assessment, and makes provision for preliminary scoping and domain mapping as separate activities before the scope is finalised, was developed to guide the research. This framework may be useful to other scholars within the field of Futures Studies. Through a suite of tools and techniques, eight pivotal factors were identified to develop four archetype scenarios of gig work in South Africa, 2035. These scenarios could deepen conversations about gig work and provide scholars and practitioners with insights about the interplay and interdependencies among factors from different domains. Moreover, it could contribute to people’s understanding of the longer-term issues and influences, and their respective roles in shaping the futures of gig work in South Africa.
