ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the language maintenance strategies used and the ideologies constructed by a middle-class Xhosa family who lives in the Western Cape. This thesis highlights the language ideologies and attitudes held by the parents and by various stakeholders in the school environment (as reported by the children). These language ideologies are sometimes taken up and sometimes rejected by the children in the family. My findings show that a number of different strategies are used by the families. Some of these strategies can be described as translanguaging, a concept, which includes what has traditionally been called code-switching, code meshing and code mixing. In other linguistic practices within the family, boundaries between languages are policed depending on the context of use. The use of these strategies is encouraged by the family language policy. These strategies highlight the negotiation between language use and ideology that takes place to maintain isiXhosa as a heritage language. XHOSA ISISHWANKATHELO: Olu phando luphicotha iindlela, amaqhinga okugcina isiXhosa asetyenziswa lusapho olufundileyo noluhlala eNtshona Koloni. Lo mqulu uqaqambisa iingcamango ngolwimi kunye neendlela abazali nesikolo abalujonga ngayo ulwimi (njengoko abatwanana bexela). Ezi ngcamango ngolwimi zithi zamnkelwe okanye zigatywe ngabantwana kolu sapho. Iziphumo zolu phando zindibonisa ukuba usapho lusebenzisa amaqhinga ahlukeneyo. Amanye alamaqinga acaciswa ngokuba yitranslanguaging ebandakanya icode-switching, codemeshing necodemixing. Kwezinye iimeko zolwimi kolu sapho, iindonga okanye iyantlukwano phakathi kweelwimi iyagadwa ngokuxhomekeka kwimeko olusetyenziswa phantsi kwayo. Ukusebenzisa la maqhinga kuyakhuthazwa ngumgaqo-nkqubo wolwimi wolusapho. La maqhinga aqaqambisa uthethwathethwano ngendlela yokusebenzisa ulwimi kunye neengcamango ngolwimi, nalapho kuzanywa ukugcina isiXhosa njengolwimi lomgquba.
