Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/handle/10019.1/132031 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis systematically reviews the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Disaster Risk Management (DRM), highlighting its transformative potential in developing and developed nations. The study evaluates AI's impact on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery across various regions, particularly focusing on underrepresented areas such as South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, East Africa, South Africa, and Ghana. The analysis synthesizes applications of AI, including predictive modeling, natural language processing (NLP), and resource optimization. An in-depth examination of AI-driven collaborations reveals shared challenges and initiatives across these regions, emphasizing collective efforts in AI-powered risk mitigation. This research places AI-enabled risk assessment within the disaster management cycle—especially in the mitigation/prevention phase—and shows how predictive and scenario-based modeling can enhance preparedness efforts. It builds a foundation for proactive risk reduction strategies. This thesis identifies best practices, challenges, and ethical considerations and contributes to a deeper understanding of AI's potential to enhance resilience and disaster preparedness in resource-constrained contexts, offering valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to leverage AI in DRM.
