Over the last few years, wine-grape producers faced numerous obstacles, preventing them to expand and/or farm profitably. This prompted wine-grape farmers to explore alternative sources of income by including other valuable crops on the farm. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the possible financial implication of structural changes on wine farms in the Breedekloof district as well as the impact of the financing thereof. To address the primary objective, three specific goals were set: (1) assessing the current profitability of wine production in the Breedekloof area; (2) identifying and contextualising the considerations of implementing alternative strategies aimed at improving profitability; and (3) evaluating the expected implication on whole-farm profitability if strategy implementation is dependent on internal finance. Through the application of systems thinking, a multi-year whole-farm capital budget was developed. A farm system consists of various interrelated components and is therefore considered complex. This makes it difficult to fully understand the system. A simulation model can incorporate the interaction between the various components that make up the farming systems. A model is an illustration of a real-world system that simulates the economic, biological, and physical elements of agriculture and investigates the links between its many components. Since the main goal of this research is to evaluate the financial impact and financing of structural changes when introducing citrus on a wine farm in the Breedekloof district, a budget model will be sufficient since the main goal of this research is to evaluate the financial impact and financing of structural changes when introducing citrus on a wine farm in the Breedekloof district. The model shows that wine-grape farmers can benefit financially from this process. Financing a rapid change is expectedly more profitable than a gradual change funded through the farmer’s private capital. The highest expected yield in terms of NPV and IRR, appears to be a structural adjustment where vineyards are replaced with citrus orchards. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
