Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/5145ae34-9b7d-422b-a8a5-4b1119aadf2f ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cohesive devices in GFL grammar instruction : an analysis of articles and pronouns in fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. This thesis examines the role of cohesive devices in teaching German as a Foreign Language (GFL), focusing specifically on the use and functions of articles and pronouns within selected fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. While literary texts offer valuable linguistic input, foreign language learners often struggle with their comprehension due to the complexity of surface -level structures, making the role of cohesive devices particularly relevant in supporting text processing and understanding. By analyzing indefinite and definite articles in “Dornröschen” (Sleeping Beauty) and personal and relative pronouns in “Rotkäppchen” (Red Riding Hood), this study demonstrates how these linguistic elements could contribute to narrative coherence and aid learners' comprehension of these texts. The research addresses the following questions: 1) To what extent can the integration of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and a text -linguistic or grammatical analysis of cohesive devices in GFL instruction contribute to enhancing learners' understanding of grammar and strengthening their (receptive) text competence? 2) How do selected grammatical elements, namely pronouns and articles, in the fairy tales “Dornröschen” and “Rotkäppchen” contribute to structuring the narrative and promoting receptive text competence in GFL instruction? The findings indicate that fairy tales, with their accessible narrative style and repetitive structures, offer a unique advantage for (text) linguistic analysis by providing naturally occurring contexts to observe cohesive elements in their specific use, making them particularly effective resources for teaching grammar.
