Some of these challenges include not being able to compete with international learner achievement standards. One of the ways to increase learner achievement is parental involvement in the education of children. However, teachers are not trained on how to effectively involve parents. South African studies further showed that teachers view parents as uninvolved. These factors influence how teachers relate to parents and in turn how they communicate with parents. The COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity for teachers to explore different ways of communicating with parents. For this study, 11 teachers were purposively selected to be part of the study. Four teachers participated in individual interviews. Seven teachers formed part of the focus group discussion The criteria to be included in the study were as follows: Teachers that have taught intermediate phase during 2020 in a community where most of the parents connected to the school live in a low socio-economic status. Teachers must have prepared educational activities for learners during the COVID-19 pandemic that had to be completed at home. Teacher must have attempted to reach out to parents in new innovative ways that was not used prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. My data analysis revealed four themes: notions teachers had about parents prior to the pandemic were challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers purposefully implemented activities during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure communication with parents, the pandemic changed parent teacher communication, and this occurred despite the various challenges teachers experienced during the pandemic. According to the findings, teachers in the study, changed their view of parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also explored communication platforms that allowed parents to have direct, instant communication with them. These communication platforms established during the pandemic is still used at these school, although its 4 years after the COVID-19 pandemic. This change in parent teacher relations showed that there is a need amongst teachers to be trained on more effective parent involvement strategies.
