Limited knowledge and lack of ICT infrastructures, in most public schools and lack of teacher efficacy, on usage of these Technological resources are the reasons often mentioned for not integrating ICT into the Tourism subject. This study reports on the implementation of Information Computer Technologies (ICT) in a Tourism classroom. The aim of this study was to understand how ICT can assist learning and teaching in the Tourism classroom. This thesis takes a qualitative approach with an action research design inquiring how ICT can assist with teaching and learning in the Grade 10 Tourism classroom. This study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm with a critical lens to not only focus on learner experiences but to reflect on teaching approaches within practice and to improve them. Data was analysed to determine the value of these Technologies in the Tourism Classroom with the use of a TPACK and SAMR framework. The research findings indicated that ICT can enhance learning and teaching in the Grade 10 Tourism classroom after the second intervention in action research. Both learners and the teachers reflected on their strengths and weaknesses in using the ICT resources when learning and teaching occur and made suggestions for improved implementation such as doing things in smaller sections and first doing transmission mode lessons and then ICT-supported lessons. The reflective process of action research allowed the researcher as a practitioner to reflect on teaching strategies to learners with diverse backgrounds. An important factor of the digital divide where learners have little exposure to ICT in their lives proved to be an important aspect to consider when planning and implementing lessons. Execution of this study indicated that ICT in the tourism classroom needs to exist co-dependently with teacher-centred instruction and teaching using ICT resources. This study assisted in Developing and improving my practice as a Tourism teacher and helped me as a teacher to plan the necessary subject content in ways that cater to the needs of every student based on their learning preferences and exposure to and familiarity with ICT- and related technologies. The limitations of this study is that it focused on the experiences of only four grade 10 learners. Emphasis of this study was on development of the teacher in practice. Additionally, more focus on how cognitive learning abilities in constructing information by utilizing ICT resources in the classroom is a potential research field.
