The catalyst for this study is found in Gert Booij’s (2010a) book, Construction Morphology, in which he argues that certain obsolete relic morphemes, once trapped in a specific construction, remain purely as “construction markers”, having no other (morphosyntactic) purpose except to form part of a construction. The inherent mismatch between the form and (lack of) function of such formatives poses a problem for morphological theory, which is directly concerned with “systematic covariation in the form and meaning [or function] of words” (Haspelmath & Sims 2010: 2, emphasis added). Moreover, the term “construction marker” is often used in the literature as a conveniently fuzzy cover term for repurposed obsolescent morphology without any precise description of its defining characteristics, behaviour, development, nor of its place within the larger grammatical architecture. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present study focuses on eight constructional idioms in Standard Afrikaans (a language which has undergone severe deflection and consequently is peppered with morphological relics) which contain so- called “construction markers”, namely the modal infinitive construction (te V-e), the dative ten construction (ten N-e), the aan’t progressive construction (aan’t V-e), the indefinite pronoun construction (iets A-s), the temporal van A-s construction, the causative construction (tot V-ens toe), the superlative construction (ten A-ste) construction and the progressive al A-end-e construction. Approached from Booij’s Construction Morphology framework, the diachronic data collected from the corpus investigation indicate that the relic bound morphemes trapped in these isolated constructions—and others—are unlike any other garden-variety morphemes, both in terms of diachronic development and synchronic behaviour, but rather fall into a novel category.
