ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Area (KCAAA) is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It currently hosts the MeerKAT radio telescope and will soon host the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, which, when completed will be the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope. A project of this magnitude requires an on-site communications network for day-to-day operations and more importantly, emergency and disaster management. This thesis captures work done in order to qualify a proposed land-mobile radio system for the use within a protected radio quiet zone on two key aspects. Firstly, the feasibility of the network is reviewed with the use of a radio propagation prediction model. The use of the model is qualified through field measurements in order to fine tune the input variables of the proposed VHF-Low (30 – 50 MHz) radio system and its intended environment. Technical issues with the conceptual design are presented along with practical solutions which should be implemented to ensure a workable communications network. Secondly, the RFI risks posed by the implementation of such a system are quantified through electromagnetic measurement techniques, and analysed based on their potential to interfere with the scientific observations.
