Maar aangesien die jeugliteratuursisteem ’n komplekse en groot polisisteem is, het ek met behulp van ’n gevallestudie na Zelda Bezuidenhout as Afrikaanse oorbruggingskrywer gekyk. Ek het spesifiek drie van haar jeugboeke, Die 3 van ons (2021), Toe ons oneindig was (2020) en As mens geluk kon proe (2018) teen die agtergrond van wokeness en politieke korrektheid, met behulp van die stipleesmetode, ondersoek. In die konteks van die Afrikaanse jeugliteratuursisteem, blyk dit dat kwessies van wokeness as “omstrede kwessies” beskou kan word. My studie word dus deur die volgende twee navorsingsvrae gerig: “In watter mate kom wokeness en omstrede kwessies in Bezuidenhout se drie jeugboeke voor?” en “In watter mate verteenwoordig of weerspieël Bezuidenhout se boeke die groter Afrikaanse jeugliteratuursisteem?”. Om dié twee navorsingsvrae te beantwoord, het ek die kollig op wokeness en politieke korrektheid, en Even-Zohar se polisisteemteorie vir my literatuuroorsig geplaas. Wokeness, politieke korrektheid en kanselleerkultuur (“cancel culture”) is komplekse en konteksafhanklike fenomene wat ’n groot rol in moderne, tegnologiese gevorderde samelewings speel. Deesdae kan diskoerse rondom wokeness ook in die Afrikaanse jeugliteratuursisteem gevind word. Dus het ek Even-Zohar se polisisteemteorie in my literatuuroorsig (hoofstuk 4) bespreek. Gebaseer op die polisisteemteorie, meen ek dat die mediasisteem (spesifiek sosiale media) met die Afrikaanse jeugliteratuursisteem oorvleuel. Só filtreer elemente van sosiale media diskoerse (wat wokeness insluit) die jeugliteratuursisteem in. In my konseptualisering van wokeness verduidelik ek dat wokeness ’n vorm van bewustheid is. Die doelwit van wokeness is om onderdrukking, uitsluiting en uitbuiting te identifiseer en aan te veg. Boonop meen ek dat die woke persoon polities korrek is en dat hulle kanselleerkultuur, as praktyk van wokeness, verantwoordelik sal gebruik om sodoende sosiale geregtigheid na te streef. Kwessies wat dikwels in woke diskoerse betrek word, sluit hoofsaaklik rassisme, seksisme en homofobie in. Maar ek meen dat kwessies, soos gestremdheid, outisme, ouderdom, chroniese siektes en geestesgesondheid sowel as liggaamsgrootte of liggaamspositiwiteit ook relevant is. My analise van Bezuidenhout se drie jeugboeke wys dat die boeke veral kwessies van seksualiteit en diverse gesinne en gesinsverhoudings uitbeeld. Ook chroniese siektes word in Toe ons oneindig was en As mens geluk kon proe uitgebeeld. Laasgenoemde jeugboek bevat indirekte verwysings na geestesgesondheidversteurings (wat eetversteurings insluit). Ras speel nie ’n belangrike rol in een van die boeke nie. Maar die gebruik van positiewe stereotipes (veral ten opsigte van seksualiteit en ras) en indirekte verwysings na geestesgesondheid het die gevolg dat die boeke nie as die perfekte eksemplare van woke of polities korrekte Afrikaanse jeugboeke bestempel kan word nie. Tog is haar boeke in die algemeen nie problematies in die konteks van wokeness en politieke korrektheid nie. Daarby reflekteer die inhoud van Bezuidenhout se boeke wel dít wat in ander Afrikaanse jeugboeke voorkom en daarom staan die boeke nie uit bo die res in terme van wokeness nie. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, I examine wokeness and political correctness in the context of the Afrikaans youth literature system. However, since the youth literature system is a complex and large polysystem, I conducted a case study on Zelda Bezuidenhout as an Afrikaans crosswriter. I specifically analysed three of her youth books, Die 3 van ons (2021), Toe ons oneindig was (2020), and As mens geluk kon proe (2018), against the backdrop of wokeness and political correctness, using the close-reading method. In the context of the Afrikaans youth literature system, it appears that issues of wokeness can be viewed as "controversial issues." My study is thus guided by the following two research questions: "To what extent do wokeness and controversial issues appear in Bezuidenhout's three youth books?" and "To what extent do Bezuidenhout's books represent or reflect the broader Afrikaans youth literature system?" To answer these two research questions, I focused on wokeness, political correctness, and Even-Zohar's polysystem theory in my literature review. Wokeness, political correctness, and cancel culture are complex and context-dependent phenomena that play a significant role in modern, technologically advanced societies. Therefore, discourses surrounding wokeness also occur in the Afrikaans youth literature system. Based on the polysystem theory of Even-Zohar (chapter 4), I argue that the media system (specifically social media) overlaps with the Afrikaans youth literature system. Thus, elements of social media discourses (which include wokeness) filter into the youth literature system. In my conceptualization of wokeness (chapter 3), I explain that wokeness is a form of awareness. The goal of wokeness is to identify and combat oppression, exclusion, and exploitation. I argue that the woke individual is also politically correct and that they will responsibly use cancel culture, as a practice of wokeness, to pursue social justice. Issues often addressed in woke discourses primarily include racism, sexism, and homophobia. However, I believe that issues such as disability, autism, age, chronic illnesses, mental health, and body size or body positivity are also relevant. My analysis of Bezuidenhout's three youth books shows that the books mainly depict issues of sexuality and diverse families and family relationships. Chronic illnesses are also portrayed in Toe ons oneindig was and As mens geluk kon proe. The latter youth book contains indirect references to mental health disorders (which include eating disorders). Race does not play a significant role in any of the books. However, the use of positive stereotypes (especially regarding sexuality and race) and indirect references to mental health result in the books not being labelled as perfect examples of woke or politically correct Afrikaans youth books. Nevertheless, her books are generally not problematic in the context of wokeness and political correctness. Moreover, the content of Bezuidenhout's books reflects what appears in other Afrikaans youth books, and therefore, her books do not stand out from the rest in terms of wokeness.
