Electronically Mediated Learning in Kgosi Mampuru and Brandvlei Correctional Centers: A Case Study. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/0cb70a40-86c5-4c77-b200-2ec98ff02d21 ENGLISH SUMMARY: This thesis explores the implementation and impact of e-learning in South African correctional centres, focussing on the experiences of incarcerated students enrolled in distance learning programmes through the University of South Africa (UNISA). The study investigates the challenges these learners face in accessing educational resources and how digital learning platforms can be enhanced to improve their academic outcomes. The study employs an exploratory research design. As quantitative research, data was collected using quantitative survey questionnaires completed by incarcerated students from three UNISA hubs: Kgosi Mampuru (2 hubs) and Brandvlei (1 hub) correctional centres. The results were analysed using MS Excel formulas and presented using tables and figures. The findings reveal significant barriers to effective e-learning, such as restrictive Internet usage policies, limited Internet access, high data costs, inadequate technical support, restrictions on digital infrastructure within correctional facilities, limited staff oversight on incarcerated students, low interaction with the UNISA library, and restricted communication with lecturers and students who are outside the correctional centre.
