ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This masters thesis presents the comparison between a Microstrip Patch Antenna Array (MPAA) and a Meandering Microstrip Line Leaky-Wave Antenna (MMSL LWA) at 10 GHz. The MPAA consists of a series-fed array of inset-fed patches, Rogers RO4003C substrate with 3.55 dielectric and a loss tangent of 0.0027, and ground plane. Of the many variations of feeding techniques for a patch antenna array, a coupled-line feed was designed. The MMSL LWA is designed using the unit cell approach with a periodically orthogonally bending microstrip transmission line with the RO4003C dielectric substrate and a ground plane. An Open Stopband (OSB) suppressing method was designed by means of periodic slots at the bends of the microstrip line that introduces asymmetry in the antenna. Each antenna is evaluated according to the performance metrics such as return loss, the radiation pattern characteristics and the gain. The simulated and measured results indicate that the MPAA has a desireable return loss and gain, while the MMSL’s method to eliminate the OSB works. The MMSL LWA has the ability to scan through broadside from the negative to the positive directions. The gain measurements were good for both the MPAA and MMSL LWA at 11.71 dB and 11.64 dB respectively. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie meestersproefskrif bied die vergelyking aan tussen ’n Microstrip Patch Antenna Array (MPAA) en ’n Meandering Microstrip Line Leaky-wave Antenna (MMSL LWA) teen ’n frekwensie van 10 GHz. Die MPAA bestaan uit ’n reeks van inset-gevoerde plakke, ’n Rogers RO4003C substraat met 3.55 permittiwiteit en ’n verliesfaktor van 0.0027, en grondvlak. Daar is baie voertegnieke vir ’n plakantenna. ’n Gekoppelde lynvoer is ontwerp met ’n intreeimpedansie van 50 Ohm. Die LWA is ontwerp op ’n soortgelyke manier as die plakantenna met ’n periodiek ortogonaal buigende mikrostrook transmissielyn met die RO4003C di¨elektriese substraat en ’n grondvlak. ’n OSB-onderdrukkingsmetode van periodieke gleuwe by die draaie van die mikrostrooklyn is ontwerp. Die werkverrigting van elke antenna word ge¨evalueer op grond van weerkaatsverlies, aanwins en stralingspatroonkenmerke. Die simulasie- en meetresultate dui aan dat die MMPA ’n goeie aanwins het, terwyl die MMSL se metode om die OSB uit te skakel werk. Die MMSL LWA het die vermo¨e om van die negatiewe na die positiewe rigtings te skandeer. Die aanwinsmetings was goed vir beide die MPAA en MMSL LWA op 11.71 dB en 11.64 dB onderskeidelik.
