It is an issue of great significance from health, social, economic, and moral perspectives (Jones et al., 2013). Global food insecurity is rising rapidly, and current predictions indicate that the situation will worsen in the coming years (Delgado et al., 2023). In South Africa, food and nutritional security remain pressing issues that have yet to be resolved. Hunger and malnutrition create a cycle that hampers the development of the South African population, ultimately preventing the realisation of its full potential. We live in a society plagued by malnutrition and food insecurity, characterised by the triple burden of malnutrition. This includes the coexistence of both overnutrition and undernutrition, as well as deficiencies in micronutrients, which exacerbate the other two issues. This paradox arises from shared root causes and the consequences of poverty and food insecurity (Jones et al., 2013; Ghattas, 2014; Stats SA, 2019c). In essence, poverty and food insecurity are perpetuating each other. A serious hurdle in developing policies related to food security in South Africa is the lack of comprehensive national data on the food intake patterns of adult South Africans. You cannot change what you cannot measure, and without nationally representative data on food intake patterns to perform dietary assessment, Government and relevant stakeholders are unable to create, implement, and measure the success of targeted interventions. This study aims to explore the complexities of food security in South Africa and improve the understanding of its dynamics by enhancing data collection and employing innovative methodologies. Current data on food security is often outdated, incomplete, or fragmented, highlighting the need for more comprehensive information. To effectively address food security challenges in South Africa, it is crucial to develop and implement new methodologies that consider the complex interplay of factors such as socio-economic status and food systems. Additionally, these methodologies should incorporate qualitative data and community perspectives. The main contribution of this study is to provide a proof of concept for developing and testing an alternative methodology for assessing food intake. This research will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach that is both time- and cost-effective in evaluating dietary patterns. The study aims to support data collection by enhancing and refining food intake methodologies, contributing to the limited information available on consumption patterns in the South African context. Furthermore, the analysis resulting from this research is expected to advance existing theories related to food and nutritional security in South Africa, as well as improve food intake methodologies on a broader scale.
