Traditionally, PTT focuses on the primary dyad, in this case the United States (US)-China dyad. This research argues that Japan, as an extradyadic state, plays a critical role in shaping regional dynamics. By examining the period from 2010 to 2024, the study highlights Japan’s dual efforts to support the US-led Liberal International Order (LIO) and resist China’s hegemonic ambitions through military cooperation and economic leverage. This research critiques the reductionism inherent in traditional PTT, emphasising the need to account for peripheral dyads, multidimensional factors, and ideational influences, to offer a more comprehensive understanding of great power relations. It proposes an expanded PTT framework that incorporates peripheral dyads to better explain the complexities of great power rivalry. Additionally, the study finds positive evidence for the wider use of ideational factors in analysing state satisfaction, demonstrating that China’s foreign policy is driven not only by material power but also by ideational evaluations. Additionally, it demonstrates that much of China and Japan’s mutual dissatisfaction is explained by ideational factors. This expanded approach enhances the validity of PTT by offering a more nuanced and multidimensional view of great power dynamics as well as demonstrating the need to view great power rivalries as regional-global interactions. This study recommends that future PTT studies include a wider use of expansionist concepts as well as the proposed peripheral actor impact model.
