Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/handle/10019.1/132355 Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2025. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In recent years, substantial efforts have been made to revive the philosophy of Ubuntu, rootedinthe belief that this ancient African philosophy—centered on the value of persons andcommunity—offers an antidote to South Africa's social and political challenges. Ubuntuhas thusexerted significant influence on the country’s politics, identity, and policies. In this thesis, I arguethat it cannot be assumed that Ubuntu applies universally to various contexts, as it nowexistsintwo distinct forms: traditional Ubuntu, rooted in communal obligations, and Neo- Ubuntu, whichemphasizes individual dignity and human rights. Recognizing this distinction is crucial. It invitesus to reconsider the implications of Matolino and Kwindingwi’s declaration that Ubuntuhascome to an end. Does this signal the end of traditional Ubuntu, Neo-Ubuntu, or both? This thesissuggests that the declaration applies only to traditional Ubuntu, leaving Neo-Ubuntu aliveandrelevant to contemporary society.
