Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/2ad89a0e-a732-4bde-a107-9127086939a8 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A large number of composers have contributed to the Afrikaans sacred choral music repertoire of the 20th century. In terms of stylistic and theological considerations, this music represents a valuable cultural tradition. However, when its distinctiveness is compared to similar traditions abroad, there are vast differences. The aim of this study is therefore to determine what this distinctiveness entails and how it came about. This study begins with an investigation of the church-historical and theological aesthetic origins of the music in question and then attempts to determine its distinctiveness by means of an analysis of several representative examples. This distinctiveness is examined specifically within a reformed context to show that the repertoire did not develop in isolation. Its origins can be traced back to the music that was practiced in the temple and synagogue services. Over time, the function of sacred vocal music (and consequently also its nature) has changed. The wide-ranging theological reflection on the specific significance of congregational hymns and congregational singing, especially in Afrikaans reformed circles during the corresponding period, is extended to provide a perspective on sacred choral music in general. This literature is included in the study to compensate for the surprising absence in the mentioned circles of any deep reflection on vocal music other than the congregational hymn. To round off the theoretical investigation with an analytical view, selected works of the following composers are discussed: F.W. Jannasch, S. le Roux Marais, S. Grové, P.J. de Villiers, C.E. Lamprecht and H.P. van der Westhuizen. These compositions serve as reference points to show the stylistic development of Afrikaans sacred choral music over the course of more than a century. In this way, conclusions can be drawn about the significance and relevance of this music for the present time. Many of the numerous choral works that were composed during this period have become forgotten today. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to show that there are indeed works that deserve to remain part of the canon, while other compositions are so bound to their time that they should be considered as being of historical importance only. To complement the investigation, an extensive chronological index of composers who contributed to this repertoire and a list of their works is added as an Appendix. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Groot aantal komponiste het tot die gewyde Afrikaanse koormusiekrepertorium van die 20ste eeu bygedra. Ten opsigte van stilistiese en teologiese oorwegings verteenwoordig hierdie musiek ’n waardevolle kulturele tradisie. Wanneer die eiesoortigheid daarvan met ooreenkomstige tradisies in die buiteland vergelyk word, is verskille egter opvallend. Die doel van hierdie studie is dus om te bepaal wat dié eiesoortigheid behels en hoe dit tot stand gekom het. Die studie begin met ’n ondersoek na die kerkhistoriese en teologies-estetiese herkoms van die betrokke musiek en poog dan om die eiesoortigheid daarvan te bepaal deur middel van ’n analise van ’n aantal verteenwoordigende voorbeelde. Dié eiesoortigheid word binne ’n spesifiek gereformeerde konteks ondersoek om te wys dat die repertorium nie in afsondering ontwikkel het nie. Die oorsprong daarvan kan nagespoor word tot by die musiek wat in die tempel- en sinagogedienste beoefen is. Met verloop van tyd het die funksie van gewyde vokale musiek (en gevolglik ook die aard daarvan) verander. Die breë teologiese besinning oor die belang van die kerklied in die erediens, veral in Afrikaanse gereformeerde kringe gedurende die ooreenstemmende tydperk, word gebruik om ook ’n perspektief op gewyde koormusiek in die algemeen te verskaf. Hierdie literatuur word by die studie betrek om te vergoed vir die verbasende afwesigheid in die genoemde kringe van enige diepgaande besinning oor ander vokale musiek as die kerklied. Om die teoretiese ondersoek met ’n analitiese beskouing af te rond, word geselekteerde werke van die volgende komponiste bespreek: F.W. Jannasch, S. le Roux Marais, S. Grové, P.J. de Villiers, C.E. Lamprecht en H.P. van der Westhuizen. Hierdie komposisies dien as verwysingspunte om die stilistiese ontwikkeling van gewyde Afrikaanse koormusiek oor die verloop van meer as ’n eeu aan te toon. Sodoende kan afleidings oor die belang en relevansie van hierdie musiek vir die huidige tyd gemaak word. ’n Groot deel van die talle koormusiekwerke wat in hierdie tydperk ontstaan het, het vandag in vergetelheid geraak. Daarom word in hierdie studie gepoog om te wys dat daar wel werke is wat verdien om deel van die kanon te bly, terwyl ander komposisies in so ’n mate tydgebonde is dat hulle slegs nog as van historiese belang geag moet word. As aanvulling tot die ondersoek word ’n uitgebreide chronologiese indeks van komponiste wat tot die repertorium bygedra het, en ’n lys van hul werke, as ’n Bylae verskaf.
