Flint, L. J. 2025. Socio-Economic & Environmental Correlates of Elephant Poaching in Africa. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/59ab7907-f0d3-4de1-871b-88c59330cd07 ENGLISH SUMMARY: Informed by major declines in African elephant populations over past decades, this paper uses continental level data obtained from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) for the period 2000 – 2022 to investigate correlates of elephant poaching. Results show that while the likelihood of elephant poaching consistently increases with a country’s forest area, CITES export quotas, GDP per capita, and urban populations, it decreases with land area under agriculture and rural population levels. Furthermore, results show elephant poaching is consistently less likely to occur in the region of Western Africa. Elephant poaching however had an inconsistent relationship with the levels of crop production in a country and poverty status. This study calls for multiple approaches at different levels of governance to mitigate elephant poaching impacts on sustainable development outcomes. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
