Central to the thesis lies the premise that both eroticism and jewellery are deeply subjective. Art jewellery pushes the boundaries of conformity by breaking away from the traditional expectations of jewellery by reflecting on the medium’s history, notions of value and placement on the body. As this study holds, art jewellery allows for the representation of individuality, be it on the part of the artist or the wearer. Practice-based research and autoethnography are utilised to reflect on my personal experiences with eroticism. The body is a critical component of this study, especially as it is marked and read at the hand of jewellery and erotic interventions. As the vessel through which an individual experiences the world, the body is key to understanding erotic experiences. I argue that eroticism cannot be visualised without the presence of the body, even as an imagined participant. In my practical work, I engage with my body as a site of research and erotic knowledge. I replicate and reveal parts of my body that are generally obscured from view, thereby turning the objects into a metaphor of eroticism as something that blurs the boundaries between private and public.
