Through qualitative interviews with five formerly incarcerated women, this study reveals the various ways in which kinship can be constituted and reconstituted in the post-incarceration context. The experiences of these women challenge the normative assumptions of the South African state that the biological family is the most important mechanism for the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals into mainstream society. Instead, it was found that their kin relationships established through the support and care from non-governmental organisations, and their kin relationship with the Christian God, were perceived as the main catalysts for their successful rehabilitation and reintegration into broader society after release from prison. In understanding kinship, this study foregrounds Marshall Sahlins’ (2013) definition of kinship as the ‘mutuality of being’ to make sense of how the women in this study were able to mutually and actively participate, engage and connect with their kinship network during imprisonment, and if (and then how) their incarceration impacted this mutual participation and connection in the context of post-incarceration. In addition, I also draw on the work of Janet Carsten to understand the complexities and nuances of kinship. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar nie.
