I am particularly interested in exploring how these elements influence the ability to create one’s mental and emotional state or well-being. While there is existing literature on how colour impacts emotion in children and studies on emotional well-being and motivation to create, I have identified a unique gap in the research. This gap specifically pertains to the influence of emotional well-being on artists’ choices in colour and motivation, a topic that has not been extensively explored. This study is primarily concerned with the materiality of unorthodox materials. The conceptual framework will be based mainly on a new materialist perspective rooted in colour psychology and its connection to emotion. To inform my writing, I explore the theories of Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti and materialist techniques from Penny Siopis and other practice-based artists. This research aims to understand the relationship between colour, emotion, and artmaking through painting. By investigating how painting can articulate issues related to my relationship with colour, emotions such as anxiety and depression, and artmaking as a healing, self-reflective practice, this study is based on therapeutic art practices and enhanced my understanding of the emotional aspects of creating art.
