It has three main objectives: to analyse the impact of natural resource abundance on business creation and growth, to assess sectoral linkages’ effects on new business creation, and to determine the human capital investment threshold necessary for business creation to positively influence growth. The findings reveal that while natural resource abundance boosts economic growth, it negatively affects new business creation. The interaction between business creation and resource abundance intensifies this negative effect, especially in resource-rich countries. Poor institutional quality further exacerbates this impact, highlighting the need for institutional reforms. The analysis identifies seven sectors with strong backward and forward linkages: agriculture; wood and paper; petroleum, chemical, and non-mineral products; metal products; electrical machinery; and financial intermediation and business activities. Agriculture and petroleum-related sectors significantly enhance economic growth, while financial intermediation is key to fostering entrepreneurship. The research also shows that low human capital investment is linked to a negative effect of business creation on growth. However, exceeding a critical human capital threshold shifts this impact to positive, emphasizing the importance of investing in skills development to unlock the full economic potential of entrepreneurship.Overall, the thesis underscores the complex interplay between natural resources, sectoral dynamics, institutional quality, and human capital in shaping the business creation-growth relationship in SSA. It calls for targeted policy interventions to optimize these factors and promote sustainable economic growth in the region. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen opsomming beskikbaar.
