Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/c689889f-6b3a-4a03-9d15-90ab58be6735 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The orchestra audition process has become particularly intense and competitive due to the limited number of positions available in professional orchestras. Potential candidates need to be aware of several factors that contribute to being well-prepared and equipped to play a successful orchestral audition. This study identifies and examines particular requirements for an orchestral violin audition taking into account preparation and practise regimens, technical and musical skills required, as well as expectations of an audition panel. Although this study presents a discussion of known preparation strategies of orchestral musicians, this study aims to provide an unique outlook of the orchestral violinist’s perspective by incorporating advice and expectations from professional orchestral violinists around the world. From conducting research, five of the most common requested orchestral violin excerpts were identified of which an in-depth musical and technical analysis of each is provided. This study therefore attempts to provide a detailed outline of specific preparation strategies, gaining insights into musical and technical requirements equipping the aspiring orchestral violinist in their audition preparation process. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die orkesoudisieproses het besonder mededingend geword as gevolg van die beperkte aantal poste wat in professionele orkeste beskikbaar is. Potensiële kandidate moet bewus wees van verskeie faktore wat daartoe bydra om goed voorbereid en toegerus te wees om ʼn suksesvolle oudisie te speel. Hierdie studie identifiseer en ondersoek spesifieke vereistes vir ʼn orkes-viooloudisie en bespreek voorbereidings- en oefenstrategieë, tegniese en musikale vaardighede wat vereis word, asook verwagtinge van ʼn oudisiepaneel. Alhoewel hierdie studie ʼn bespreking van bekende voorbereidingstrategieë van orkesmusikante insluit, beoog die studie om ʼn unieke uitkyk vanaf die orkesviolis se perspektief te bied deur advies en verwagtinge van professionele orkesvioliste regoor die wêreld in te sluit. Vyf van die mees algemene gevraagde orkesuittreksels is geïdentifiseer waarvan ʼn volledige musikale en tegniese ontleding van elkeen verskaf word. Hierdie studie poog dus om ʼn gedetailleerde uiteensetting van spesifieke voorbereidingstrategieë te verskaf, insluitende musikale en tegniese vereistes wat die aspirant-orkesviolis sal toerus in hul oudisievoorbereidingsproses.
