Saayman, F. J. 2025. Exploring the Qualities of Effective Nursing Leadership in a Selected Private Hospital in Namibia. Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/2ac77183-b7ad-4bde-8aac-97d5de972fcd ENGLISH SUMMARY: Background and problem statement: Nurse managers working in hospitals should facilitate an environment that is conducive to enabling a nursing team to work together and align their nursing care practice with the healthcare service organisation’s mission, vision, philosophy, and objectives to provide quality care to patients. In order to achieve this, the nurse manager should use their leadership and management capabilities to be actively involved and present in a clinical setting giving effective guidance, direction, and leadership to the nursing team (Orukwowu, 2022). While the influence of effective leadership is broadly recognised and described in the available literature, the voices of the people experiencing it are often absent. Therefore, exploring and describing what effective leadership constitutes in nurse leaders’ authentic daily work interactions, in a private hospital in Namibia, assisted in deepening and broadening this understanding as it provided a contextualised depiction of how effective leadership plays out at the study site. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach was used to establish an in-depth understanding of how nurses view the elements and qualities that they recognise as effective nursing leadership at the study site. The aim of this study was to explore and describe how nurses and nursing unit managers recognise effective leadership in their daily work interactions in a selected private hospital in Namibia. Individual, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data from a sample of twelve participants. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of Stellenbosch University, and permission was obtained from the study site before data collection. The study adhered to the principles of ensuring trustworthiness and ethical standards. Results: Four themes emerged from the data. The findings suggest that effective leaders have a strategic focus, and live out their values in their daily activities. In this way, leaders are able to develop and communicate clear visions, set clear and direct goals and objectives for their team. Effective leaders are teachers and developers who transfer their skills to their teams and motivate and inspire them to grow and develop into future leaders. Effective communication was identified as a significant leadership skill. Effective leaders create a safe and supportive environment motivate their teams and maintain productive environments. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insight into the elements and qualities of effective leadership as recognised by nursing personnel and Nursing Unit Managers in a private hospital in Namibia. Both groups emphasised the importance of effective leaders having a clear vision, communicating effectively, and being committed to continuous learning as fundamental traits of effective leaders. Participants highlighted that leaders should articulate a compelling vision and engage in active listening, fostering an environment where team members feel valued and empowered to share their ideas. Effektiewe kommunikasie is geidentifiseer as ’n belangrike leierskapsvaardigheid.
