Globally, more focus is placed on incorporating sufficient entrepreneurship efforts into higher music education. This thesis investigates synergies between Arts Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship to design a sustainable Social-Arts Entrepreneurship model. It explores how such a model could be included in higher music education to benefit students by proposing a potential module outline. A deductive explanatory research design guides the research process. The qualitative research involves a literature study about Arts Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship and synergies between the two, which acts as a conceptual framework for this research. This is followed by an empirical investigation, during which interviews were conducted with ten field experts, and existing synergies models implemented at selected higher education institutions were explored. From this research, it is apparent that synergies between Arts Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship do exist, and the two fields can be merged to form a sustainable Social-Arts Entrepreneurship model. In this thesis, a Social-Arts Entrepreneurship model was developed, consisting of three parts, namely 1) Social-Arts Entrepreneurship Ecology, 2) Social-Arts Entrepreneurship Development Cycle, and 3) Social-Arts Entrepreneurship's Mission Within its Sphere of Operation. This Social-Arts Entrepreneurship model provides a theoretical context for Social-Arts Entrepreneurship and where and how it fits into the grander scheme. This research also showed that arts training alone is not enough to make a successful career in the arts and including Social-Arts Entrepreneurship in the curriculum could benefit higher music education students. In this thesis, a proposed Social-Arts Entrepreneurship module outline was developed, which could be implemented in higher music education. This research provides insight into the current state of collaboration and synergies that exist between Arts Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship. It also highlights the need that exists in higher music education, especially conservatories and the world of classical music, for sufficient entrepreneurial training with a social impact focus. Incorporating Social-Arts Entrepreneurship into higher music education has the potential to empower and prepare students for a sustainable career in the arts, improve graduate employment outcomes, and facilitate social impact.
