Using a qualitative approach consisting of multiple case studies, and informed by queer theory and family communication theory, the research examines the experiences of six LGBTQ+ families, including perspectives from both parents and adolescent children. Data was collected through photo-voice interviews with parents and collage-making activities with adolescents, followed by semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed five key themes: 1) Normalized (Queered) Sexuality Conversations; 2) The Role of Personal Histories in Shaping Practice; 3) Heteronormativity as a Lens for Sexuality Conversations; 4) Navigating LGBTQ+ Identity and Parenthood; and 5) Family Communication Patterns and Dynamics. The findings highlight how LGBTQ+ parents actively work to provide comprehensive and affirming sexuality information while navigating complex cultural contexts. Many parents drew on their own experiences of marginalization to inform open communication practices. However, the persistence of heteronormative discourses, even within LGBTQ+ families, was also observed. The study draws on queer theory to explore how LGBTQ+ families in South Africa challenge and reconstruct normative ideas of family, gender, and sexuality through everyday communication practices. By applying queer theory to analyze these families' experiences, the research informs how the theory can be adapted to intersectional and non-Western contexts, addressing cultural and societal nuances. The findings extend the application of queer theory by demonstrating its relevance in examining the dynamics of LGBTQ+ parenting and communication in South Africa's unique cultural landscape. The study further extends family communication theory by revealing communication dynamics that don't neatly fit established categories, suggesting the need for more flexible, culturally responsive models. Based on the findings, the study proposes a model for queering family communication theory and recommends developing a toolkit to support LGBTQ+ parents in navigating sexuality conversations. The research has implications for theory, policy, and practice related to sexuality education and support for diverse families in South Africa and beyond.
