These settings often expose professional nurses to unique stressors and challenges, such as heavy workloads, role ambiguity, and a lack of immediate team support. These stressors and challenges lead to workplace stress and burnout and affect their well-being and the quality of care provided. This study aimed to explore and describe the factors contributing to workplace stress and burnout among professional nurses in single-staffed occupational health clinics in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan region. Methods: This study used a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research design. It involved ten professional nurses purposefully selected from ten single-staffed occupational health clinics managed by three different occupational health providers in the region. Data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews guided by a self-designed interview guide. Thematic analysis, as outlined by Braun and Clarke (2006: 81), was performed to identify recurring themes and insights. Findings: The findings highlight several individual, occupational, and environmental factors contributing to stress and burnout. Key factors include a lack of support systems, excessive workloads, unclear job roles, insufficient training opportunities, and feelings of isolation. Additionally, the absence of coping mechanisms and organisational support worsens these stressors. Implementing identified coping strategies and interventions—such as mentorship programmes, effective feedback, and resilience training—could help alleviate stress and promote overall well-being. Conclusion: Professional nurses working in single-staffed occupational health clinics encounter various challenges that affect their mental health and job performance. Comprehensive support systems and customised interventions are essential to reduce workplace stress and prevent burnout. Implementing these measures will improve occupational health services and ensure sustainable care delivery.
