Previous research on the PSCs has predominantly focused on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) dynamic in the evolving policing space, with the view to enhancing public safety and security. In contrast, this study relied on the Nodal Governance Theory to focus on the significance of Private Security Companies in the National Security of the South Africa, an area that has hitherto received minimal research attention. Purposive sampling that targets knowledgeable officers from the military, police and the private security companies was used. Interviews were conducted to tease out the officers’ lived experiences regarding the significance of the PSCs to national security. Thematic Content Analysis was employed as a way of making sense of the respondents’ shared experiences, from which themes were identified for closer scrutiny. The findings of the study indicated strong support for the argument that PSCs are significant to South Africa’s national security. Although they may be regarded as force-multipliers to law-enforcement agencies, extreme caution will need to be exercised towards formal incorporation of these companies into the national security architecture of the country.
