Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/82721a99-9e09-40ad-a123-dc9e2b286b0c ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the unique musical dimensions of yaadt music, a genre intimately tied to the lives and histories of Cape Town’s Coloured communities. By combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, this study dissects the rhythmic, timbral, and textural elements that give yaadt its distinct vibe. Vibe refers to the atmospheric and emotional qualities that are projected by an object, person or environment and when used to describe music, foregrounds its aesthetic traits. The study finds that yaadt music is more than a genre because its vibes are rooted in community activities and interactions that are encoded musically. Through a framework rooted in vibe theory, this research examines how the music’s predictable rhythms, syncopations, and texture are crafted to evoke collective memory and communal experience. The findings highlight yaadt as an adaptable and evolving form, transcending the traditional boundaries of genre to become a mode of social and emotional release. The thesis introduces a conceptual model, yaadtcore, capturing yaadt’s fluidity and its place within South African musical traditions. This study thus codifies yaadt as both a unique musical form and a living archive of community identity and emotional endurance. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die unieke musikale dimensies van yaadt-musiek, 'n genre wat verweef is met die lewens en geskiedenisse van Kaapstad se Kleurling-gemeenskappe. Deur 'n kombinasie van kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe analise, ontleed hierdie studie die ritmiese, timbrale en teksturele elemente wat yaadt sy kenmerkende vibe gee. Vibe verwys na die emosionele en omgewingskwaliteite wat deur 'n objek, persoon of omgewing uitgestraal word, en wanneer dit gebruik word om musiek te beskryf, beklemtoon dit sy estetiese eienskappe. Die studie bevind dat yaadt-musiek meer as net ’n genre is, aangesien die vibes daarvan gewortel is in gemeenskapsaktiwiteite en interaksies wat musikale kodes bevat. Deur 'n raamwerk gewortel in vibe-teorie, ondersoek hierdie navorsing hoe die musiek se voorspelbare ritmes, sinkopasies en teksture saamgestel word om kollektiewe geheue en gemeenskaplike ervarings op te roep.
