In South Africa, netball is actively played at multiple levels, including school, club, university, provincial, and national competitions. At the school level, approximately half a million players participate, while around 9,700 are involved at club and provincial levels. School sports play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s sporting landscape, contributing to physical, social, and personal development. As global sports participation continues to rise, so does the need for well-trained coaches. It is imperative that coaches are not only qualified but also engage in continuous professional development to adapt to evolving playing styles. Coaching education often involves self-directed learning through mentorship, formal courses, and other resources. Despite its importance, research on coaching education in South Africa remains limited. There is a pressing need for a comprehensive analysis of netball coaching education in the country, particularly given the gaps in existing literature. While some studies have explored coaching education in various sports, none have specifically focused on netball coaching at primary and high school levels in South Africa. This study aimed to evaluate the current state of coaching education practices for primary and high school netball coaches in the Western Cape. The research objectives included: (1) developing a detailed questionnaire to assess coaching education practices, (2) validating the questionnaire through expert review to ensure its effectiveness, (3) testing the questionnaire’s reliability using the test-retest method with coaches outside of the Western Cape, (4) administering the questionnaire to Western Cape coaches to gather insights into their experiences, and comparing these experiences to identify areas for improvement in coaching quality. Globally, coaching education systems vary significantly. Countries like New Zealand, Australia, and England have established structured accreditation frameworks, offering multiple levels of coaching certification. For example, New Zealand provides five coaching levels, Australia offers six, and England has two. In contrast, South Africa currently offers only two levels of certification: Level 1, an entry-level qualification, and Level 2, which is more advanced and geared toward coaching at higher competitive levels. By examining these international frameworks, the differences in the structure and progression of netball coaching education become apparent. This study adopted a survey-based research design, utilising both online and in-person questionnaires as the primary data collection method. The research sought to answer two key questions: (1) What is the current state of coaching education practices for primary and high school netball coaches in the Western Cape? (2) Which specific areas within coaching education require improvement to enhance coaching quality? A non-probability sampling method was used to recruit participants, encompassing all eligible primary and high school netball coaches in the Western Cape. The study proposal was reviewed and approved by Stellenbosch University’s Master’s and Doctoral (M&D) Committee and the Social, Behavioural, and Education Research (REC: SBE) Ethics Committee. The thesis is structured into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the study, presenting the problem statement, aims, objectives, and rationale. Chapter 2 provides a literature review, focusing on the theoretical framework of coaching education practices. Chapter 3 outlines the research design and methodology, detailing the approach and procedures used. Chapter 4 presents the results from the survey, while Chapter 5 discusses these results, highlights the study’s limitations, and offers recommendations for future research. The results are compared with existing literature, and areas requiring further exploration are identified.
