Research suggests that these farmers often lack the essential financial management competencies needed to improve farm business practices. Addressing this critical need, the study develops a curriculum framework tailored to address the limited financial management knowledge among Nigerian emerging farmers, thereby promoting lifelong learning. Through a mixed-methods research approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative data, the study investigates the financial management training needs and preferences of emerging farmers across diverse agricultural sectors in Nigeria. The findings reveal systemic challenges hindering effective financial management among these farmers, such as financial planning, accurate record-keeping, and comprehension of financial statements—skills essential for informed decision-making and improving profitability in farming. Despite the clear importance of financial management for these emerging farmers, existing training programs in Nigeria are limited, focusing primarily on basic farming techniques rather than comprehensive financial management. This gap underscores the necessity for a specialised financial management curriculum that aligns with the unique needs of emerging Nigerian farmers. To address this gap, the study engaged both emerging farmers and financial experts in a collaborative process to design a curriculum framework focused on practical applications in financial management. Insights from both groups, synthesised through Delphi rounds, informed the development of a curriculum framework emphasising competencies essential for effective training, such as budgeting, income, and cost management, as well as risk management. The resulting curriculum framework aims to strengthen the financial viability of these farmers’ enterprises. Moreover, the study identifies a strong preference among emerging farmers for flexible training methods, including community-based sessions and accessible online courses, which cater to varying levels of formal education and digital literacy. Barriers to participation such as time constraints, costs, and accessibility highlight the importance of creating adaptable, affordable, and contextually relevant training. Additionally, the study establishes 28 essential competencies critical for effective farm management, providing a structured approach to lifelong learning that aligns educational content with specific challenges faced by emerging farmers. A positive relationship was found between access to financial management training and improved application of knowledge and skills, underscoring the importance of such educational initiatives in building a financially literate farming community. This research meets the immediate educational needs of Nigeria’s emerging farmers while laying the foundation for future research and policy development in agricultural financial management. The proposed curriculum framework contributes to the development of a more resilient and financially literate farming sector in Nigeria, supporting sustainable and competitive agricultural practices. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of financial management training on emerging farmers’ financial success, ensuring relevant and effective educational interventions. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nigeriese opkomende boere wat winsgewende en volhoubare boerdery nastreef se sukses hang grootliks af van bepaalde finansiele bestuurskundighede. Navorsing toon dat hierdie boere dikwels tekort skiet aan hierdie essensiele bestuurskundighede vir die verbetering van hulle boerderybestuurspraktyke. Die ondersoek spreek hierdie kritieke behoefte aan deur ’n kurrikulum raamwerk te ontwikkel om Nigeriese boere se beperkte finansiele bestuurskundigheid aan te spreek. Hierdeur kan praktiese inhoud verleen word aan die bevordering van lewenslange leer van opkomende boere in Nigerie. Die ondersoek steun op ‘n gemengde metode navorsingsbenadering om kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe data te integreer om opkomende boere in verskeie landbounywerhede se finansiele bestuur behoeftes en voorkeure te bepaal. Hierdie navorsing bring die sistemiese struikelblokke na vore wat effektiewe finansiele bestuur van boerderye binne die breer Nigeriese landbou beperk. Die ondersoek toon dat boere oor die algemeen sukkel met kernaspekte soos finansiele beplanning, akkurate rekordhouding, en begrip van finansiele state. Hierdie aspekte is essensieel vir die verbetering van boerderye se winsgewendheid en ingeligte besluitneming. Ten spyte van die belang van finansiele bestuur in boerdery, skiet bestaande Nigeriese opleidingsprogramme tekort betreffende omvattende finansiele bestuursopleiding en fokus eerder op basiese boerdery tegnieke. Hierdie tekortkoming beklemtoon die behoefte aan ’n finansiele bestuur kurrikulum pasgemaak volgens Nigeriese boere se behoeftes. Die behoeftebepaling is gedoen deur ’n opname onder opkomende boere en finansiele bestuurskundiges. Deur hul bydraes en belyning van menings via Delphi rondtes is ‘n kurrikulum raamwerk ontwikkel wat gemik is op praktiese finansiele bestuur toepassings. Die voorgestelde kurrikulum sal boere toerus met essensiele kundighede in begrotings, inkomste- en kostebestuur en risikobestuur om daardeur die finansiele lewensvatbaarheid van hul boerdery ondernemings te verhoog. Die resultate toon boere se sterk voorkeur vir gemeenskap gebaseerde opleidingsessies en toeganklike aanlyn kursusse wat voorsiening maak vir verskeie vlakke van formele onderrig en digitale geletterdheid. Die ondersoek identifiseer ook ernstige hindernisse wat deelname aan finansiele bestuursopleiding aan bande le, soos tyd-, koste- en toegangklikheidsbeperkings. Hierdie beperkings gaan aanpasbare, bekostigbare en kontekstuele relevante opleiding verg. Die ondersoek bevestig 28 essensiele kundighede wat nodig is vir effektiewe boerderybestuur en ’n gestruktureerde benadering tot lewenslange leer bied. Die opvoedkundige inhoud is direk afgelei van Nigeriese boere se spesifieke behoeftes. Die positiewe verwantskap tussen toegang tot finansiele bestuur opleiding en verbeterde toepassing van kennis en vaardighede beklemtoon die belang van sulke opvoedkundige inisiatiewe om ’n geletterde boerderygemeenskap te skep. Die ondersoek spreek die onmiddelike opleidingbehoeftes van Nigeriese opkomende boere aan en verskaf ’n fondament vir verdere navorsing en beleidontwikkeling in finansiele bestuur in landbou. Die oproep vir ’n gestruktureerde benadering tot lewenslange leer dra by tot die ontwikkeling van ‘n veerkragtiger en finansieel geletterde Nigeriese boerderygemeenskap. Die voorgestelde kurrikulum dien as ’n nuttige bron vir opleiers en beleidmakers om boere te kan bemagtig met relevante kennis en vaardighede vir die bevordering van ‘n volhoubare en mededingende Nigeriese landbousektor. Verdere navorsing behoort te fokus op tydreeks ondersoeke om die langtermyn effek van verbeterde finansiele bestuur opleiding op boere se finansiele sukses en volhoubaarheid te bepaal om te poog om om opvoedkundige intervensies relevant en effektief te hou.
