Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/8380d2f2-8a8f-4565-ae4b-40ba91c3d12e ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study examined the role and effectiveness of social impact assessment (SIA) in promoting sustainable development in South Africa. The main research question was “How can the effectiveness and role of SIA practice be improved to better support sustainable development during the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process in South Africa?” The research was structured around achieving several key objectives. Firstly, it explored the literature on sustainable development and SIA in South Africa, aiming to develop a comprehensive checklist of criteria for assessing the effectiveness of SIA to be used to evaluate SIA documents. Secondly, it reviewed both international and national policy frameworks governing SIA to understand the regulatory context. Thirdly, the study applied the checklist for SIA to a series of case studies in South Africa to assess the role, significance, integration, and effectiveness of SIA as used in the case studies. This included identifying challenges and gaps in current SIA practices. Finally, the study offered recommendations to enhance SIA practices in South Africa with the goal of better supporting the achievement of sustainable development. Through this multifaceted approach, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how SIA can be leveraged to better foster sustainable development in South Africa. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het die rol en doeltreffendheid van sosiale impakstudie (SIA) in die bevordering van volhoubare ontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika ondersoek. Die hoofnavorsingsvraag was "Hoe kan die doeltreffendheid en rol van SIA-praktyk verbeter word om volhoubare ontwikkeling tydens die Omgewingsimpakbepalings (OIB)-proses in Suid Afrika beter te ondersteun?" Die navorsing is rondom verskeie sleuteldoelwitte gestruktureer. Eerstens het dit bestaande literatuur oor volhoubare ontwikkeling en SIA in Suid-Afrika ondersoek, met die doel om 'n omvattende kontrolelys van kriteria vir die beoordeling van die doeltreffendheid van SIA te ontwikkel om SIA-dokumente te evalueer. Tweedens het dit beide internasionale en nasionale beleidsraamwerke wat SIA beheer, hersien om die regulatoriese konteks te verstaan. Derdens het die studie die kontrolelys ter bevordering van SIA toegepas op 'n reeks gevallestudies binne Suid-Afrika om die rol, betekenis, integrasie, en doeltreffendheid daarvan te assesseer. Dit sluit die identifisering van uitdagings en leemtes in huidige SIApraktyke in. Laastens het die studie aanbevelings aangebied om SIA-praktyke in Suid-Afrika te verbeter, met die doel om volhoubare ontwikkeling beter te ondersteun.
